Your Fall Weekend Playbook in Edna: Lake Texana, the Chili Spill, and Where to Eat After

If you already live in Edna, you know the fall calendar isn't spread evenly across town. It clusters. Between the first weekend of October and the second weekend of November, one address does most of the heavy lifting for weekend plans, and Main Street reshuffles itself to catch the runoff.

The thesis, before you plan anything

Almost every marquee fall event in Edna happens inside the same complex south of town off State Highway 111. The Jackson County Youth Fair, the Texana Chili Spill, and the trails and piers at Texana Park all sit inside the Brackenridge Recreation Complex, which the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority has run since management transferred from Texas Parks & Wildlife to the LNRA in 2012. That single fact changes how a local plans a Saturday. You aren't hopping between venues across the county. You're picking which corner of one 11,000-acre lakefront property to spend the day at, and then deciding where on Main Street to eat on the way home.

The six-week window that owns the fall

Here is the compressed calendar. If you're going to block one Saturday for something outside the house, block it here.

The Youth Fair is the anchor. Attendance runs around 9,000 across the run, which is a meaningful share of a county that is home to nearly 15,000 people. If you have never done the math on that before, it's worth sitting with. Roughly one in two Jackson County residents passes through the gates during fair week.

The Chili Spill closes out the season. The 24th Annual Texana Chili Spill runs November 6 through 8 at the Brackenridge Main Event Center, presented by the LNRA and the Jackson County Go-Texan Committee. Thursday is the anchor for locals with someone in the family who served: the Veterans Ceremony and Appreciation Dinner is sponsored by H-E-B at 5 p.m., all veterans, active military and their immediate families are invited, and a Whataburger-sponsored fireworks display follows the ceremony.

Friday and Saturday are the cook-offs. Friday's competitions include Salsa, Margarita, Chef's Choice, Sausage, and Go-Texan Dutch Oven Dessert. Saturday is where the serious money changes hands. Cook-off action kicks off at 9 a.m. with the Bloody Mary Competition, followed by Beans, Go-Texan Jackpot Chicken, Gumbo, Go-Texan Jackpot Ribs, Chili, Go-Texan Brisket and the KidsQue Competition, and the Go-Texan 1st place Brisket Champion takes home $3,500 in cash with the option to enter the Top Gun Jackpot for more prize money. The Wine and Beer Garden runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., spotlighting local artists all day, and the Cornhole Jackpot Tournament returns, with registration at 9:30 a.m. and play starting at 10 a.m. on the cook-pad near the stage.

Local tip: if you only have Saturday, go for the Bloody Mary judging window in the morning and the brisket walk-around in the late afternoon. The gap in the middle is the best time to slip out for the trails.

The park most residents underuse

Texana Park is not the state park you grew up calling it. The name change matters because a lot of Edna residents still assume it takes a state parks pass to walk the trails. It doesn't. Located in the Coastal Plains near Edna, Texana Park and Campground, formerly known as Lake Texana State Park, offers an oak-shaded playground on the shores of the 11,000-acre Lake Texana. There are 141 campsites nestled under live oaks and pecans, over six miles of hiking trails, lighted fishing piers, and a modern nature center.

A few park facts that change how you use it in October and November:

• There are three fishing piers, two of which are lighted for night fishing, plus a fish cleaning station and multiple boat ramps. Night fishing is the sleeper play once the humidity drops.
• A valid Texas Fishing License is required for anyone 17 or older.
• Available species include black bass, white bass, crappie, walleye, and several species of catfish.
• There is no designated swimming area, alligators live in the lake, they generally avoid humans, but you should never swim at dawn or dusk, and dogs should not swim in the lake. This is the safety note out-of-town guests always need to hear before you turn them loose with a paddleboard.
• The Texana Community Education Center offers up-close encounters with local reptiles and amphibians, which is the rainy-Saturday backup plan for grandkids.

If you're bringing family in for the Chili Spill weekend and can't put them in your guest room, the cabins are the move. The park offers two spacious rental cabins for those who prefer air conditioning to tent flaps. Book early. Chili Spill weekend fills the complex.

The pier and trail access matters for another reason. For reservations and details on LNRA's park and campgrounds on Lake Texana, the Brackenridge Recreation Complex office is reachable at (361) 782-5456. That's the number worth putting in your phone if you host visitors more than once a year.

Race Saturdays, if that's your thing

Texana Raceway Park sits inside the same recreation footprint and runs a full 2026 calendar. The Southern Touring IMCA Modified Series presented by On Demand Shirts opened its 2026 campaign at Texana Raceway Park on March 13, 2026. Fall race nights fill the parking lots along SH 111, which is the practical reason to know the schedule even if you don't buy a ticket: it changes how long the drive back into town takes after dinner.

Where to eat on the way home

Edna's food scene is short but pointed, and it's built for exactly the traffic patterns fall weekends produce. Match the stop to the trip.

Coming off the lake, heading north up Wells. B.E.A.R.D.S Coffee at 601 W. Main is the practical caffeine stop, and it lines up with a swing through H-E-B at 301 N. Wells for cook-off supplies before you drive back out to Brackenridge.

Post-fair, kids in the truck, need it fast and hot. Taqueria La Texana at 206 Ed Linn Street serves homemade tortillas, al pastor and carnitas street tacos, beef fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, and weekend pozole rojo, dine-in and takeout. The pozole is the play on a cool October Sunday.

Sit-down after the Bloody Mary judging. 3 Potrillos Mexican Restaurant at 114 E Main and Charlie's Sports Bar and Grill at 119 E Main sit across from each other on the square. If you want a change of pace from cook-off food, Rancho Agaves Mexican Grill at 608 N East St is the alternate.

Old-school lunch. Palmetto Restaurant at 906 West Main is the coconut pie stop. If you have never taken an out-of-town buyer there for lunch when they're touring homes with you, you are missing a trick.

Date night, off the square. Lavaca Bluffs Vineyard and Winery is a popular meeting place among locals and visitors who want to learn more about the wine-making process or enjoy a wine tasting. It's technically in Lolita, not Edna, but it's the county's answer to a fall evening that isn't a cook-off.

Catering the tailgate. Cicada Catering at 1005 S Wells handles the sort of chili-cook-off after-party you don't want to cook for yourself.

What this means if you're thinking about the next twelve months

Here's the piece most residents miss until they've been through one full cycle. The fall calendar in Edna is compressed enough that if you host family, list a home, or plan any outdoor project, the six-week window from the Youth Fair through Chili Spill is a hard planning boundary. Contractors are booked, RV traffic on SH 111 spikes, the Main Event Center parking lot bleeds into the shoulders of the highway, and the cabins at Texana are gone by Labor Day.

That's a useful boundary to own on purpose. If you have a fall painting project, get it wrapped before the first Friday in October. If you're staging a home for winter listing photos, the best clean-light weeks are actually late October between the fair and the cook-off. If you have out-of-town family who want to see what Edna is really like, don't invite them in July. Invite them the second weekend of November.
